27.
Harry woke to the sound of a woman screaming.
âWhat the hell is that?â George said. He got up and lit a candle, took it to the window and threw open one of the shutters. âThereâs lights in that tower over there. What is that?â
âThe harem,â Mou said from the dark behind them.
âWhatâs going on, do you think?â
âThe djinn has come back,â the boy said.
âMore like someone being murdered. When youâre living with bandits, bad spirits are the last thing I worry about.â
The screaming stopped, started again a few minutes later. She sounded as if she was being tortured. Sleep was impossible. Harry tried to plug his ears with his fingers. It made no difference.
Dawn crept up the sky, Harry peered out, saw shadows moving about the court below them. The muezzin began the call to prayer. âPrayer is better than sleep, come and pray.â The melodious chanting was interrupted by the piercing shrieks coming from the harem.
He heard voices outside in the corridor and then slippers padding on the stone stairs that led to their rooms.
He turned towards the door and waited.
A moment later it opened, and the Chief Eunuch walked into the room. He was a brute of a man, any muscle he had once had now turned to fat, his skin was smooth as basalt, coal black and the size of one of the granary doors.
âAre you the magician?â he said, looking at Harry.
âWell, I can make money disappear in no time, but I think that is the man youâre looking for.â
The eunuch fixed his solemn eyes on George. âYou are to come with me. Bring your magic with you.â
George dressed quickly and picked up the satchel with his medical kit.
âThis doesnât sound good,â Harry said. âI should come with you.â
The Chief Eunuch put a hand on Harryâs chest and pushed him back into the room. âJust him,â he said.
The woman screamed again.
âIâll be alright,â George said. He sounded a lot more confident than he looked. Harry felt someone squeezing his hand, hard. He looked down. It was Mou.
âEverything will be alright,â he said to him, as the door slammed shut again.
